Ghana’s sanitation journey

Living a good and healthy life is the most important aspect of every human.

Poor sanitation has been one of the country’s greatest challenges. Some citizens care less about how the environment can be made clean rather, they tend to worsen the situation. Various measures have been taken to control it, but it seems to be effective for just a while and fades off later.

The launching of zoom lion has helped manage the disposal of waste. Also, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (A.M.A) introduced the National Sanitation day where every first Saturday of every month, Ghanaians in various communities get to together to clean their environment. The distribution and placements of dust bins to houses and on the streets as well as market places like Makola Market, Agbogbloshie Market, Tema Station, contributed to creating awareness on how to keep the environment clean.

Some community members are fond of dumping their rubbish into gutters, this prevents the free flow water making it stagnant and this produces mosquitoes that gives malaria, and causes flooding during heavy rainfalls. Some go a long way of polluting the sea and making the coastal area dirty. The coastal area serves as a tourist site but due to its unkempt nature, tourists don’t visit this site regularly causing a decline in revenue. Plastic bottled drinks, polythene bags and sachet water are on high production and these waste materials take years to dispose.  These waste bags and bottles breed mosquitoes leading to disease outbreak like cholera and malaria which also leads to death.

The government should put more strategic movements to deal with filth in Accra and Ghana as a whole. I entreat all Ghanaian to keep their environment clean.
